medlog shipments are well-packaged and always arrive safely

It’s our task to ensure urgent and sensitive cargoes arrive safely, intact and on time. The best way to guarantee this is by using a safe and highly-suitable form of packaging that provides the best possible protection.

PRIMARY PACKAGING……

…is the immediate contact containment for the contents of your shipment. In the medical sector they are items such as test tubes, swabs and sealable beakers.

SECONDARY PACKAGING…

…surrounds the primary packaging to make sure it cannot move in any way. When transporting fluids, it is important that the secondary packaging is absolutely fluid-tight to provide an additional line of protection against leakage.

OUTER PACKAGING…

…protects a consignment from external mechanical forces and special thermal packaging prevents undesirable external temperature fluctuation from affecting your contents.

IMPORTANT

  •  Remove old barcodes from the outer packaging to avoid confusion when the scanner is used.
  • Attach the bill of lading in a clearly visible position – if possible, on the side of the package.
  • The labelling of hazardous goods must always be adapted to the contents of the shipment.

Calculating volumes

The calculation form below can be used to calculate the volumes of your shipments based on length, width and height.

  • Only whole numbers can be entered in the input boxes.
  • The calculation is completed as soon as all figures have been entered.

Thermo-packaging

Medlog thermo-packaging is a passive cooling system that enables a wide variety of packaging solutions to be made available for the transportation of medical consignments requiring exact adherence to stipulated temperature ranges.

The medlog thermo-logger provides an uninterrupted record of the storage temperature during the entire journey.

Medical shipments and potentially hazardous samples require uninterrupted thermal conditions. As a rule, this involves chilling or freezing within a precisely-defined temperature range. medlog is setting new standards in passive refrigeration with a variety of special packaging solutions.

medlog inspects the combination of sample type, required means of refrigeration and type of packaging via a specially-developed validation method. The results provide the basis for suggesting customised packaging solutions to be discussed with the customer.

The medlog thermo-logger guarantees a seamless record of temperature status throughout the entire journey. Comprehensive temperature evaluation, analyses of deviations, and graphic depictions are provided by medlog to create a basis that allows our clients to ensure the efficacy of their own quality management.

Hazardous goods

The transportation of hazardous substances on roads is regulated by the European ADR treaty. In the context of medical issues, the ‘Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises dangereuses par route’ is mainly applied to infection hazards.

According to the ADR, the following pose risks of infection:

  • Biological substances
  • Cultures
  • Genetically-manipulated micro-organisms
  • Medical or clinical waste
  • Samples taken from patients

Feel free to ask for our guidance on all types of hazardous substances: +43 (0)50 229

For the purpose of transportation, infectious substances are divided into 2 classes:

Biological substances. Category A (UN 2814, UN 2900)

Infectious substances that can cause disabilities, life-threatening or fatal illnesses, if they leak from the protective packaging and come into physical contact with humans or animals.
– Category A substances

Biological substances. Category B (UN 3373)

Infectious substances that do not fulfil the criteria for inclusion in category A are classified as category B substances.

Patients’ samples

Samples taken from patients include any substances or materials taken from humans or animals, such as liquid and solid excreta, secretions, blood samples and blood components, tissues, smears, body parts and organs, particularly those transported for research, diagnosis, examinations, treatment or prevention purposes.

Non-hazardous substances

  • Substances containing micro-organisms that do not constitute pathological risks for humans or animals.
  • Pathogens neutralised so as not to pose a health risk.
  • If the concentration of pathogens is no greater than naturally occurring levels, and it can be assumed they do not pose a significant risk of infection.
  • Blood and blood components collected for the purpose of transfusion, or the preparation of blood products to be used for transfusions or transplantations, and all tissues or organs intended for transplantation.

Examples of exempt medical (also veterinary) specimens:

  • Blood and urine samples required to test cholesterol, blood sugar and hormone levels
  • Biopsies for the identification of cancer
  • Pregnancy tests

Please note: ‘Exempt medical specimens’ are subject to the provisions of the ADR for the purpose of transportation and are to be specially packaged and labelled accordingly.
